01Airport layout, briefly
Ngurah Rai operates as a single integrated complex handling both international and domestic flights, rather than separate standalone terminal buildings you'd need to transfer between by bus or train. International arrivals flow through immigration, baggage claim and customs in a fairly linear path — see our getting to Bali guide for the full arrival walkthrough.
02Facilities worth knowing about
- SIM card counters — available past baggage claim, convenient but generally pricier than buying in town.
- Currency exchange & ATMs — both airside and landside; compare rates rather than using the first counter you see.
- Lounges — several pay-per-visit or card-access lounges are available for longer layovers, a worthwhile option if you have several hours to kill.
- Prayer rooms, family facilities and basic medical services are all present, as at any major international airport.
03Domestic connections
If you're connecting onward within Indonesia — Lombok, Java, or further afield — domestic departures are handled within the same complex, though it's worth building in a reasonable connection buffer rather than a tight one, particularly during peak arrival periods when immigration queues can run long.
04Making the most of a long layover
For layovers of several hours or more, it's sometimes possible to briefly leave the airport if your visa situation allows it (this depends heavily on your nationality and connecting itinerary, so verify before assuming) — Jimbaran's beachfront seafood warungs are a short drive away and a genuinely good way to spend a stopover rather than sitting in the terminal. Otherwise, a lounge pass is the more comfortable option.
05General tips
- Arrive with extra buffer time during peak season (July–August, December–January) — queues at both check-in and immigration lengthen noticeably.
- Keep your accommodation address handy; it's sometimes requested at immigration.
- Traffic between the airport and South Bali can be heavy in the late afternoon and evening — factor this into onward transport timing.
