Three small islands off Bali's southeast coast, reached by fast boat from Sanur, with dramatically clearer water and more rugged coastline than the main island's beaches. Lembongan and Ceningan are connected by a yellow bridge and feel laid-back and walkable; Penida is larger, wilder, and better explored by scooter or driver.
02Nusa Penida highlights
Home to the island's most photographed viewpoints — Kelingking's T-rex-shaped cliff, Diamond Beach, and Broken Beach among them. Roads here are rougher than the main island's, and distances deceptively long, which is the main argument for staying at least one night rather than cramming it into a single day trip from Bali.
03Nusa Lembongan & Ceningan
Smaller, calmer, and easier to get around than Penida — a good fit if you want beach time and snorkelling without Penida's rougher roads and bigger distances. Mangrove tours and seaweed farms add a different texture to the usual beach-day itinerary.
04Day trip vs. staying over
A day trip from Sanur is entirely doable for Lembongan, less so for Penida given the driving distances between its main sights. If manta ray snorkelling at Crystal Bay or catching Kelingking at sunrise (before the crowds) matters to you, staying at least one night makes a real difference.
