A new cruise season begins in Benoa
Bali's Benoa Port is preparing for the 2026–27 international cruise season with coordinated passenger handling, berth management and safety arrangements. Port operator Pelindo said on 8 October that its facilities now support large vessels calling at the harbour in Denpasar. The news matters not only to passengers arriving by sea, but also to travellers arranging day trips, transfers and stays around the south of the island.
What has actually changed
According to Indonesian news agency ANTARA, the eastern cruise berth has been extended from 350 metres to 500 metres. The operator says the longer facility can accommodate two large cruise ships at once. Pelindo also describes a more integrated approach to managing the wharf, passengers and cooperation between agencies. These are infrastructure and operational claims, not a guarantee that every ship can berth in every weather or traffic condition.
First arrival and the numbers behind the story
The Heritage Adventurer marked the opening phase of the season, arriving with 90 passengers and 84 crew, Pelindo told ANTARA. Its figures show 65 cruise calls and around 140,000 international visitors in 2025, compared with 56 visits and 107,717 passengers in 2024. The port said 76 vessels had registered to visit during 2026. These categories refer to different reporting periods and should not be read as a completed 2026 result.
What cruise passengers should expect
Benoa sits in Denpasar, not in the centre of Ubud or the beach districts. If your ship is visiting for a day, check the official ship excursion information and the time you must be back aboard before choosing a distant attraction. Traffic between the port, Sanur, Kuta, Seminyak and Ubud can be unpredictable. Always allow a substantial buffer for the return journey. Cruise operators may use different check-in, transport and security procedures, so follow the instructions for your own ship rather than relying on an old online itinerary.
Can you start or finish a cruise in Bali?
Pelindo says Benoa can support both destination calls and turnarounds, where passengers embark or disembark. That does not mean every cruise uses Bali as a departure port. Check your booking confirmation for the actual embarkation terminal, check-in window and luggage arrangements. If you are flying into Bali to join a cruise, travelling a day early is a sensible precaution against delayed flights, airport queues and road congestion.
A useful day ashore: choose one area
For a short port call, Sanur offers restaurants and a beachfront promenade comparatively close to Benoa. Travellers interested in a traditional market, museum or urban food experience could look at central Denpasar. Ubud's temples, galleries and rice fields are attractive but demand much more driving time. Beaches farther west or south may be feasible on a longer call, but it is generally better to enjoy one area properly than race across the island.
Booking drivers, excursions and accessibility
Pre-arrange private transport with a reliable provider when your schedule is tight. Confirm where the driver is allowed to meet passengers, whether the price covers waiting and tolls, and what happens if the ship changes its arrival time. Passengers with mobility needs should ask their cruise line about gangway access and transport at the terminal; an expanded berth does not by itself establish step-free accessibility for every ship. Carry drinking water, sun protection and enough Indonesian rupiah for minor expenses.
What is still unconfirmed
The announcement does not supply a passenger-facing timetable, a list of every cruise call, a universal terminal map or guaranteed transfer prices. Travellers should check directly with their cruise line, shore-excursion provider or Pelindo for trip-specific information. This article will need updating as the 2026–27 season progresses.
The bottom line
Benoa's upgrade is a practical step in Bali's growing cruise tourism infrastructure. More berth capacity and better-coordinated handling could make the port more useful to operators, but individual passengers still need to plan around ship schedules, local traffic and their own boarding instructions. The best Bali shore excursion is one you can enjoy without worrying about missing the ship.
