If you are using Bali airport or travelling between the airport and Nusa Dua over the next week, allow a little more flexibility than usual. The 63rd International Association of Women Police (IAWP) Annual Training Conference runs from 20–24 September at The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, with delegate arrivals scheduled across 16–20 September and departures across 25–27 September.
01 What is happening in Nusa Dua
The 63rd IAWP Annual Training Conference is scheduled for 20–24 September 2026 at The Westin Resort Nusa Dua. The International Association of Women Police lists this year's theme as Women Leading Global Change, with training streams covering leadership, community confidence, high-profile incidents, investigations and policing innovation.
Bali Police began detailed security planning before the conference. A Tactical Wall Game on 7 September was used to map communication, personnel placement and emergency-response scenarios for the international event.
That planning matters to travellers mainly because the conference is centred in the Nusa Dua tourism zone and delegates are entering through Bali's main airport during a defined arrival window.
02 Why airport traffic is getting extra attention
On 17 September, Ngurah Rai Airport Police said preparations had moved into the operational phase as participants and delegations began arriving. The airport security deployment includes 49 personnel: 34 from the airport police and 15 policewomen from Bali Police.
Police said particular attention is being given to arrival and departure routes, terminals, access roads into and out of the airport, and other locations connected with the conference. Personnel are being positioned at points considered vulnerable to congestion, with traffic flows managed situationally as conditions change.
That wording is important. It means traffic control may change in response to actual vehicle movements; it does not amount to a published all-day closure of the airport road network.
03 Delegate arrival and departure windows
A cross-agency airport coordination meeting on 14 September set out the delegate movement windows. According to Ngurah Rai Airport Police, arrivals are scheduled from 16–20 September, while departures are scheduled from 25–27 September.
The airport plan covers VIP II movements as well as regular international and domestic terminal channels. Police, immigration, customs, airport authorities, health quarantine, communications providers and other agencies have coordinated passenger processing, pickup access, vehicles, health support and information around those movements.
For ordinary passengers, that creates two periods when extra organised movements may overlap with normal airport traffic: the lead-in to the conference through 20 September, and the main departure period from 25 September.
04 What ordinary travellers should expect
There is currently no verified blanket road-closure notice attached to this conference. Bali Post's 17 September report says police are mapping congestion-prone locations and using situational traffic control, while the official police releases focus on security and coordinated delegate handling.
If you are flying in or out during these windows, the sensible approach is practical rather than dramatic:
- Leave a buffer. Do not plan an airport run around a best-case Google Maps estimate, especially from Nusa Dua, Kuta, Jimbaran or other south-Bali areas.
- Check live traffic close to departure. Temporary police control can affect a junction or access point without becoming a formal island-wide diversion.
- Keep your driver or pickup contact reachable. Delegate vehicle movements and terminal management can change which meeting point is easiest at a given time.
- Follow airport and police directions on the day. A live instruction at the terminal or airport access road is more useful than a social-media rumour about a supposed closure.
The airport remains open and there is no current official advice telling normal passengers to avoid Ngurah Rai because of IAWP.
05 What about Nusa Dua traffic?
The conference venue is inside the Nusa Dua tourism precinct at The Westin Resort. That means organised delegate transport will connect the airport and Nusa Dua before, during and after the conference.
No official source reviewed for this update has published a blanket closure timetable for the public roads into Nusa Dua. Residents, hotel guests and visitors should therefore avoid assuming that the precinct is "closed". The more realistic possibility is short-term congestion or controlled movements around particular delegate convoys, venues or access points.
If you have a fixed dinner, tour, airport transfer or meeting in Nusa Dua between 20 and 24 September, give yourself some extra time and check the route before leaving. The same applies to airport transfers during the delegate arrival and departure windows.
