Bali covers roughly 5,780 square kilometres — smaller than many first-time visitors assume, closer in size to a large metropolitan area than a full country, despite the huge range of landscapes and experiences packed into it. It's around 150 kilometres at its longest stretch, meaning a drive from one end to the other is a genuine multi-hour trip on the island's often congested roads, not a quick hop.
02Why this matters for planning
Because of traffic and road conditions rather than raw distance, Bali takes noticeably longer to cross than its size on a map suggests — a drive that looks like an hour on Google Maps can easily become two in South Bali traffic. 03Regencies & administrative regions
Bali is divided into eight regencies (kabupaten) plus the city of Denpasar, each with its own local government — Badung (South Bali's tourism heartland, including much of Canggu, Seminyak and Uluwatu), Gianyar (Ubud), Karangasem (East Bali), Buleleng (North Bali), Jembrana (West Bali), Tabanan, Bangli and Klungkung. Most visitors never need to think about these boundaries directly, but they explain some administrative quirks — like why certain rules or fee structures vary slightly by area.
04The terrain shaping everything else
A chain of volcanic mountains runs roughly east-west through the island's centre, with Mount Agung (Bali's highest point, at just over 3,000 metres) and Mount Batur among them — this mountainous spine is why North Bali feels so climatically different from the south, and why roads crossing the island's middle wind and climb rather than running flat.
