01Why the distinction matters
Booking a villa "in Canggu" can mean anywhere across a several-kilometre stretch of coast that spans genuinely different neighborhoods, each with its own character, price point and walkability. Knowing the difference before booking saves the common first-timer surprise of ending up a 20-minute scooter ride from the cafes and beach clubs they saw in photos.
02Canggu proper (Batu Bolong & Echo Beach)
The original core — Batu Bolong's black-sand beach and surf break, dense with cafes, surf shops and the area's original nomad energy, plus Echo Beach a little further along, known for its beach bars and consistent surf. This is the busiest, most built-up part of the wider Canggu area, walkable in a way the newer fringes aren't.
03Berawa
Just south of Canggu proper, Berawa has developed into a more polished, slightly quieter version of the same scene — home to some of the area's best-known beach clubs and a growing cluster of upscale dining, with villas generally set back from the coast in a way that trades a short walk to the beach for more space and often better value.
04Pererenan
North of Canggu proper, Pererenan is the newest wave of growth — quieter rice-field villas and a fast-expanding café scene that's increasingly drawing people who found Canggu's core too busy or too built-up. It's less walkable to the beach than Canggu proper, but the trade-off is a calmer, greener setting that's still only a short scooter ride from everything else.
05Kerobokan
Sitting between Canggu and Seminyak, Kerobokan is less a beach neighborhood than a well-connected middle ground — home to some excellent restaurants and a growing homeware and design-shop scene, popular with longer-term residents who want easy access to both Canggu's café culture and Seminyak's dining and nightlife without committing fully to either.
