Candidasa developed as a modest beach town along Bali's southeast coast, and while erosion has changed its original beach significantly over the decades, it's held onto a relaxed, unhurried character that makes it a comfortable base for exploring East Bali without the more remote feel of basing directly in Amed or Sidemen.
02The beach & lagoon
A tranquil lagoon just outside town, separated from the ocean by a narrow strip of sand, offers calm water for a swim or a peaceful walk — a different, quieter kind of coastal scenery than Bali's more dramatic surf beaches. The main town beach itself is more modest than in Candidasa's earlier tourism era, but still a pleasant spot to sit with the sea in front of you.
03Nearby: Tenganan ancient village
A short drive inland, Tenganan is one of Bali's oldest Bali Aga (pre-Majapahit) villages, preserving distinct customs, architecture and social structures that predate much of the Hindu-Javanese influence found elsewhere on the island. It's also one of the only places in the world producing double-ikat weaving — a genuinely rare textile tradition worth seeing demonstrated, and a good complement to a Candidasa stay.
04Diving & snorkelling access
Candidasa sits within reasonable reach of several of East Bali's better dive and snorkel sites, including Tepekong and Mimpang, known for stronger currents and the chance of encountering larger pelagic fish — better suited to more experienced divers than the calmer shore diving further along the coast at Amed.
05Who Candidasa suits
A sensible middle-ground base for East Bali — close enough to Amed's diving, Sidemen's rice valleys and the temples further inland to make day trips easy, without the greater remoteness of staying directly in any one of those spots. It suits travellers who want East Bali's quiet pace but aren't looking for the most isolated option available.
