Chez Gado Gado fire in Seminyak: what happened and what tourists need to know

A major fire devastated Chez Gado Gado, the long-running beachfront restaurant at Jl. Camplung Tanduk No. 99, Seminyak, on Sunday evening, 30 August 2026. The blaze began during dinner service at about 7:30–7:40pm WITA and spread rapidly through the restaurant's alang-alang thatched pergola and roof.

01 What happened at Chez Gado Gado

Local police reporting says a birthday celebration was taking place in the restaurant's pergola area before staff heard a loud pop near a decorated table. Security and other employees found flames already burning around decorations and the pergola ceiling. Staff attempted to control the fire with portable extinguishers, but the flames spread quickly through the highly combustible thatched roof.

Witnesses described a very fast evacuation. Australian media and local Bali reporting show diners moving away from the restaurant and towards Seminyak Beach as the fire intensified. The scene was dramatic, but the most important distinction is that no fatalities have been reported.

02 Fire response and damage

Badung Fire and Rescue chief Dewa Ngurah Bhayudewa told detikBali that the first report was received at about 7:40pm WITA. Crews departed at roughly 7:42pm and arrived at around 7:50pm.

Ten fire engines from five Badung stations were deployed — two each from the main post, Kunti, Majapahit, Dalung and Mengwi. The chief said firefighters used about 115,000 litres of water during an operation lasting roughly two hours and 40 minutes.

DetikBali reported an initial damage estimate of about Rp4 billion, with around Rp700 million in property in a southern office area saved. Police reporting also says four motorcycles were destroyed. The affected restaurant building was reported as approximately 45 by 40 metres.

03 Injuries: why the reports appear to conflict

Early Indonesian reports concentrated on the fact that there were no deaths, and some early stories described the incident as having no casualties. Later Australian reporting contains more specific injury information.

7NEWS Australia reports that a 17-year-old boy from Western Australia was treated in a Bali hospital for burns to his face and arms. 7NEWS also says Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade was aware of the incident and could provide consular assistance if needed. The West Australian identifies the teenager as being from Mount Barker in WA's Great Southern.

People reports that 9News Australia said one restaurant staff member suffered burns to her hand. We have not found a direct Indonesian police or fire-service statement confirming the full injury count, so Totally Bali is treating these as attributed media reports rather than an official final casualty tally.

04 What caused the fire?

This remains the most important unresolved point. Kuta Police are investigating the fire in coordination with Puslabfor Polda Bali, the Bali Police forensic laboratory. Four witnesses had been examined by Monday, according to local reporting.

The preliminary police account says balloons used as birthday decorations were involved and describes them as helium balloons that came into contact with a candle. Several later witness accounts and Australian reports instead refer to hydrogen or another flammable gas.

05 What tourists in Seminyak need to know now

The fire was at Chez Gado Gado on the beachfront end of Jl. Camplung Tanduk. DetikBali reported on Monday that activity around the surrounding area had largely returned to normal and nearby businesses, including the hotel opposite and a nearby gelato outlet, were operating again.

That does not mean Chez Gado Gado itself is open. The restaurant was badly damaged. At the time of this update we have found no verified reopening date or formal public rebuilding timetable.

Chez Gado Gado's own website still displays its normal operating hours, but the page appears not to have been updated for the fire. Travellers should therefore not rely on those listed hours until the restaurant or its operators publish a confirmed reopening statement.

06 Why Chez Gado Gado matters to Bali visitors

This was not an obscure local venue. Chez Gado Gado describes itself as a Seminyak beachfront restaurant with more than 30 years of history, originally growing out of Bali's beach-club and nightlife era. Its location at the end of Camplung Tanduk, directly on Seminyak Beach, made it especially familiar to international visitors and long-term Bali regulars.

Australian eyewitness reporting reflects that tourist significance: several Australian families were dining at or waiting for tables when the fire began. That is why the story has quickly moved beyond local Bali media into Australian and international coverage.

07 A wider safety question about party balloons

PerthNow reported on 1 September that at least one Bali venue had moved to ban the type of party decoration blamed in early accounts of the fire. That response is understandable, but the official forensic investigation into Chez Gado Gado is still incomplete.

The distinction between gases matters. A balloon floating upwards can be filled with helium or hydrogen, but their fire properties are very different. Travellers and venues should not assume that a balloon advertised or casually described as “helium” necessarily contains helium unless its supplier and gas source are known.

08 What happens next

The next reliable update should come from the police/forensic investigation, the restaurant or its operating company, or confirmed medical reporting. We are watching for:

• a forensic finding on the ignition source and balloon gas;
• a confirmed final injury count;
• an official Chez Gado Gado or operator statement;
• rebuilding or reopening plans; and
• any new safety rules or venue policies arising from the fire.
