01Surf spots by skill level
- Beginner — Kuta Beach and Canggu's Batu Bolong: soft, forgiving whitewash, plenty of surf schools right there.
- Intermediate — Canggu's Old Man's, Balangan: friendlier reef and point breaks once you're past the basics.
- Advanced — Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin: fast, powerful reef breaks that demand real experience and respect.
02Best season & swell
The dry season (April–October) brings the most consistent swell to the west and south coasts, and is generally considered peak surf season. The wet season isn't surf-less, but conditions are less predictable and the west coast can get choppier.
03Board rental & lessons
Surf schools are everywhere in the beginner-friendly spots, with lessons typically bundling board hire, a wetsuit top if needed, and an instructor. Board rental alone is cheap and easy to arrange daily or weekly if you already know what you're doing.
04Surf etiquette
Bali's reef breaks get crowded, especially at the well-known advanced spots, and locals surf them daily — dropping in on someone else's wave or paddling straight to the peak as a visitor is a fast way to get an unfriendly reaction. Watch the lineup for a while before joining in if you're new to a spot.
