01 Meet the TATS Editorial Team
TATS is built by real travellers, real writers, real researchers and real people — with a little help from some very clever technology.
At the centre of it all is TATS Man, the travelling face of TATS and the person responsible for setting the tone, direction and standards behind our travel content.
He leads the TATS Editorial Team, a human-led team that researches destinations, checks information, develops stories, improves guides and helps keep our websites useful, entertaining and up to date.
But AI doesn't run TATS. People do.
02 Human-led. AI-assisted.
We think AI is an incredible tool when it is used properly.
Our team uses artificial intelligence to assist with things such as research, organising information, analysing large amounts of travel data, checking content consistency, brainstorming improvements and helping us maintain thousands of pages across the TATS network.
What AI doesn't do is independently decide what TATS believes, recommends or publishes. The humans behind TATS remain responsible for the final product.
Our editorial process combines first-hand travel experience from TATS Man and contributors, human research and editorial judgement, local knowledge and destination-specific information, official and reputable sources where appropriate, AI-assisted research and content production, and human review, editing and final publishing decisions.
That combination lets us work faster without turning TATS into another faceless website pumping out generic AI travel articles.
03 Led by TATS Man
TATS Man is more than the bloke in the photos.
He helps define how TATS approaches travel: curious, independent, practical, occasionally ridiculous and always interested in what a destination is actually like once you get beyond the brochure.
Some articles are written directly in the first-person TATS Man voice, particularly where personal experience, observations or recommendations are central to the story.
Others are published by the TATS Editorial Team, especially broader destination guides, practical travel information, news, comparisons and reference material that involves research from multiple sources.
Either way, the same editorial philosophy applies: we want to tell travellers something genuinely useful.
04 Why we use AI
Running a modern travel network involves an enormous amount of information.
Visa rules change. Hotels open. Attractions close. Prices move. Transport systems evolve. Government policies are updated. New destinations become popular and old advice becomes outdated.
AI helps our human team process that information much more efficiently. It can help us identify contradictions, compare sources, organise research, improve explanations and spot information that may need updating.
That gives our team more time for the parts that matter most: judgement, travel experience, local context, photography, humour, exploration and deciding what is actually worth telling you.
05 We don't pretend AI doesn't exist
You'll occasionally see publishers trying very hard to hide the fact that modern technology is involved in producing their content. We're taking the opposite approach.
AI is part of the TATS editorial toolkit, just like search engines, cameras, mapping software, analytics platforms and publishing systems.
06 Real people remain responsible
Before important content is published or updated, our goal is for a real member of the TATS team to remain responsible for its accuracy, usefulness and presentation.
AI-generated suggestions can be wrong. So can humans. That's why good publishing requires checking, judgement and accountability rather than blindly trusting any single source.
Where a subject involves rapidly changing rules, government requirements, safety information or other important travel decisions, we encourage travellers to also check the relevant official source before acting.
07 Local voices matter
TATS isn't intended to be one person's view of the world.
As the network grows, we want more local contributors, travellers, photographers, researchers and destination experts involved.
Someone who lives in Jakarta understands things a visitor may never notice. Someone who grew up in Bali may explain a ceremony differently from somebody who arrived last week. Someone travelling through Spain can provide a completely different perspective again.
AI can organise information. It cannot replace those experiences.
That's why the long-term vision for the TATS Editorial Team is a combination of human travellers, local knowledge and intelligent technology working together.
08 Serious travel information without taking ourselves too seriously
TATS isn't trying to sound like a government tourism brochure.
We like beautiful destinations, strange experiences, cold beers, unexpected detours, questionable travel decisions, amazing local food and the occasional story that probably shouldn't have happened.
You'll see personality throughout the network. You'll also see TATS Man occasionally appearing where you least expect him.
Behind the humour, though, we're building something serious: a large independent travel resource designed to become more useful as it grows.
09 The TATS promise
We won't pretend every article was painstakingly typed from scratch with a fountain pen in some romantic beach shack. We use modern technology.
We also travel, research, photograph, question, edit, verify, argue about things, change our minds and occasionally discover that the locals knew better than we did.
That's travel.
And that's TATS.
