01Reading reviews properly
An overall star rating tells you less than a handful of recent, detailed reviews. Filter for the last few months specifically — management, staff, and even pool maintenance can change hands and quality can shift faster than the aggregate score reflects. Look for repeated specific complaints (Wi-Fi, noise, mosquitoes) rather than one-off gripes.
02Cancellation policies
Independent villas, which make up a large share of Bali's inventory, often have stricter cancellation terms than the big hotel chains — sometimes non-refundable outside a narrow window. Read this before booking, not after plans change, especially if you're booking during shoulder season when your dates might still shift.
03Booking direct vs. through a platform
Platforms give you review history, buyer protection and easy comparison — the safer choice for a first stay somewhere. Once you've stayed at a property and liked it, many hosts offer a better direct rate for a return booking, which is a widely accepted practice here rather than something to feel awkward about.
04Red flags worth pausing on
- A listing with only old reviews, or a sudden gap in review history.
- Photos that never show the actual view from the room or pool, only staged angles.
- Prices dramatically below everything comparable nearby, with no clear reason why.
