01 A working coastline
The villages strung along Jembrana's coastline in Bali's far west — Perancak, Pengambengan and smaller fishing settlements — represent a genuinely different side of coastal Bali from the resort beaches of the south. These are working fishing communities, largely bypassed by tourism development, offering a window into traditional Balinese coastal livelihoods that have changed relatively little despite the tourism transformation elsewhere on the island.
02 Traditional jukung boat racing
Jembrana is known for its jukung — traditional colourful outrigger fishing boats — and hosts traditional boat racing events, most notably the Jembrana Bay regatta events that showcase these vessels in competitive racing, a genuine local cultural tradition rather than a tourist performance. Timing a visit around one of these events, when scheduled, offers a rare glimpse of authentic maritime culture.
03 Perancak fishing harbour
Perancak serves as the main fishing harbour for the region, with boats coming and going, fish being unloaded and traded, and a genuinely functional working atmosphere similar in spirit to Kedonganan Fish Market near Jimbaran but considerably less visited by tourists given its remote location relative to South Bali.
04 Practical notes
This is genuinely off the standard tourist circuit — minimal English is spoken, tourist infrastructure is essentially absent, and visiting requires a private driver and a specific interest in authentic coastal life rather than curated attractions. Best combined with a broader West Bali or Jembrana regency circuit given the driving distance from South Bali.
